Chapter 19 has
Michael's now iconic shovel over the Broken Arrow. The arrow is a nice symbolism for
Marcus's little speech to Michael about the "good of the many". Old Roman metaphor was that the individual arrow snapped easily, but many arrows together would not break
that is actually the principle behind fascism. the fasces was a bundle of rods tied around an axe handle and was not only the symbol of the roman magistrates authority, but was also carried for use in corporal and capital punishment. what led to it symbolizing fascism was the symbology of the leader as the axe with the rods held tight to support. it is, of course, the same principle marcus spoke of and was the ideological standing of the colony until gatekeeper overthrew the standing power. it is now most likely a dictatorship, the key differences being perception: in fascism the leader strives (in theory) to make everyone feel important to the goals of the state to help instill a sense of nationalism and commitment to the standing regime, while in a dictatorship the leader drops all pretense of making the masses feel important and rules through fear.
