The Republic

The Republic

An authoritarian state centered in Texas that sees itself as the last legitimate successor to pre-collapse government, but in practice operates as an oligarchy under General Gwin Kramer and his senior officers. The Republic does not function as a democracy -- it functions as a centralized military government that prioritizes control and obedience over freedom.

Power is enforced through the Red Guard. Order is maintained through surveillance, control of movement, forced labor for those labeled "undesirables," and a tightly managed economy.

History

• May 8, 2009 -- Widespread panic as the outbreak reaches Texas. The Republic's forerunners fight to secure the state's borders and cut off communication, but forces are scattered and losing the battle.
  
• August 3, 2009 -- Kimmet leads a team to Pantex to retrieve nuclear weapons.
  
• December 19, 2009 -- Fall of Fort Irwin/Boulder; forces scatter, some regrouping at Fort Hood. "It was anarchy. The people were crying out for order, from Chaos."
  
• January 1, 2010 -- The rise of the Republic: a captain becomes a General as Gwin Kramer takes over, organizing and securing the state behind wire fences and then steel, with active landmines spanning the borders. Texas's citizens unite under a new flag and order, "Without Law there can be no freedom," giving up their own freedoms in exchange for safety after the old world died under poor leadership.
  
• 2027 -- After many years under this government, citizens have accepted their position in the world, though a munition shortage strains the Republic and the infected threat has subsided into something regional and manageable.
  

Ideology and Conflict with Westport

• Westport is viewed as a direct ideological and strategic enemy because it represents freedom, trade, and decentralization -- where the Republic tries to control its population through rigid authority, Westport thrives on openness and commerce, making it harder for the Republic to justify its own repression. Their relationship is strained not just politically, but philosophically: Westport proves people can live without absolute control.
  
• Citizens accept the Republic's leadership in part due to widespread propaganda against the freedoms of "the West" (Westport).
  

Systemic Mismanagement

• The Republic cannot keep up with the demand for food, supplies, and logistics despite a massive population of roughly 1.7 million people.
  
• It relies heavily on trade of its oil and fuel reserves, but as other territories have supplemented their own supplies, this export has become less valuable.
  
• The Republic's only remaining chance to sustain itself is securing a port to the Pacific -- namely, Westport.
