I think it's worth noting that Michael says the ceiling/walls seemed to be reinforced by this stuff....only as they got further down the tunnel. Not sure how this matters, but he mentions being concerned of its structural integrity, then it began to have this special mud. Just before this he said they had been walking a long time. So a good amount of the tunnel ISNT reinforced. Either Ink knew how far he could go without structure, or they ran out of mud....or I'm paying too much attention to mundane details.

Yeah. This keeps me busy as well. Maybe them zobos have done both: eat the meat and use parts of the dead human bodies for fortifying the walls of their tunnels - maybe by using formaldehyde to make the tissues much harder ... After all Ink is a chemist; and he would know where to get enough of this shit to do something like this - and considering what he has achieved and done so far it is no far shot to considering him doing something like this ...

I don't think the non-reinforced part of the tunnel carried on for all that long. I think Michael was saying "We walked for a long time. Oh, by the way, at the beginning of the tunnel it didn't look too sturdy, but then it looked like the dirt had been packed somehow."

I think it's more likely that the very beginning of the tunnel, maybe the first 10-20 feet were not reinforced. Probably the part of the tunnel that was still underneath the church and sloping downward.

Or maybe it's not a wall AT ALL!
