I don't think the non-reinforced part of the tunnel carried on for all that long. I think Michael was saying "We walked for a long time. Oh, by the way, at the beginning of the tunnel it didn't look too sturdy, but then it looked like the dirt had been packed somehow."

I think it's more likely that the very beginning of the tunnel, maybe the first 10-20 feet were not reinforced. Probably the part of the tunnel that was still underneath the church and sloping downward.
