I imagine that the safe houses are 70's/80's vintage McDonald's restaurants. I once read over a list of local civil defense shelters and was shocked to find that the majority of them were located at McDonald's restaurants around the city (no joke!). I had a chance to visit one shortly after and saw what this meant for myself. The manager's office was located down in a very deep basement. There was a door next to the office, behind which there was a bomb shelter stocked with civil defense supplies. The manager explained that the company got a tax break for building using this design and maintaining the shelters.
