Recap

Part 1

The chapter begins with a frantic Burt receiving a call at the safe house from Pete, who reveals that Dunbar has been attacked, he's been shot, and Max has been taken. They quickly realize that they knew about Dunbar, and the attack was retaliation.

Back at Dunbar, CJ, Tanya, Kelly, and a wounded Puck are trapped in an apartment, without power and under siege. The stairwell is controlled by the attackers, making it impossible to get to Pegs, Hope, and the baby who are believed to be on the 6th floor. CJ decides that in order to get to Pegs and Hope they will need power to restore the monitor system. As such, Tanya and Kelly head to the basement to use the garbage chute to connect extension cords to the generators in the basement, while Puck, barely conscious, stays behind to defend the apartment.

Meanwhile, Michael and Victor navigate the deep caverns of the tunnels, attempting to repair Kodi and re-establish a connection to the remote detonator. They encounter two “Mothers”, killing them before the detonators can be reconnected. They find a clear path to make an explosion and clear the area, deciding to let Saul continue. They try to turn it back, which is a mistake. Roberts destroys Kodi and they are now trapped with Ink.

In a desperate attempt to restore power and save Pegs and Hope, Kelly and Tanya venture into the darkness of the basement, relying on limited resources and the faint hope that they won't encounter the attackers there. They finally are able to get power up. With the power back, CJ is able to locate Pegs and Hope in the baby's room on the 6th floor, but also sees that Scratch is headed in their direction, making getting them out more difficult. She gets in contact with Pegs through a baby monitor in the apartment that they're in.

Pegs follows CJ's directions and retrieves a hidden pistol from the fire extinguisher box. She stations herself at the end of the stairwell to slow Scratch’s advance, while CJ works to figure out a way to help her get out of the tower before things get more dicey. They determine that getting gas masks down to them will be their only hope to buy them time, they plan to release the canisters into the stairwell. Pegs releases them just as Scratch reaches her floor, forcing Scratch to retreat back.

Kelly and Tanya try to figure out what comes next and if there will be any help. Realizing that they're trapped, Saul makes the difficult decision to stay behind and detonate the C4, sacrificing himself to ensure that the rest make it out alive. After a struggle with the timer and Roberts destroying the Kodi, Saul straps his last night vision goggles to the C4 and starts the process. A tearful goodbye is shared among the team.

The story cuts back to Dunbar as Pegs releases CS gas into the stairwell to buy time. As Pegs and Hope escape, a dying Scratch attacks them on the fire escape, only to be shot and seemingly killed by Pegs, the ladder to the ground is stuck and they have no choice but to stay there. Pegs and Hope can only wait and try their best to stay alive. Just when things seem hopeless, Burt arrives in the jeep to help rescue her. At the same time, Riley is ready to kill off Scratch until Burt makes her stop from being a killer. Just then an explosion can be heard in the distance, meaning that Michael detonated Kodi and has killed Saul as well.

Michael and Victor are then trying to get up after the detonation that knocked them down. As they are walking to get up, Randy gets close and comes up behind them, only to be killed by them. Burt leaves to try and get his own head together, being tired with all of the decisions and things he has to deal with. In the end, there are long stories and tales, there is finally a look into who has been there. The story then fades to the colony later on.

The story then transitions 14 years later, in a scene where Michael and Pegs are discussing Nicholas' future and telling him the stories of his parents and grandmothers. They explain that Nicholas, like his parents and grandmothers, may be special, and may be able to become immune to the biters.

The story then ends at the training camp, where Nicolas arrives to finally see who he might want to be. Burt greets him, as always. They are discussing who Nicolas is as a character. In the end, it seems that Nicolas might not be fully on board with where he's going. He does then decide to train and see how things are as the story fades into the dark.
