A theory for Angel's past: The Family could also refer to Gypses. If he was caught hotwiring cars, the judge could have given him an ultimatum. "Jail or military school." Sounds like he's been away from his past life for a long time.

I think Scratch's sweet talk was real. I think she wants out of the Mallers and she is willing to do what it takes. You can tell she is totally and openly defying Durai.

I like the possible Gypsy angle! Not so sure about the "Jail or Military" ultimatum. If Angel had gone to a military school I would like to think it would have seasoned him a bit, at least made him more attentive in his handling of other soldiers. When the story started he was a VERY bad Second Lieutenant, arrogant, unwilling to listen and afraid to actually take the lead. He got better (most young Lieutenants do), but the fact that he started so badly makes me think this was still all very new to him.

I believe it was mentioned in the first chapter that he went to officer school. I'm not military. I don't know if that is what it's called.
