I've been chatting to a few people about the trip today, and one of them mentioned that I'll need some sort of special visa in order to cross state lines - I think they said it was a "green paper" or something. Is this something you guys have heard of? And if so, do I need seperate papers for each state line we cross?

lets try to get ahold of cupcakezombie. She made a trip similar to this one last year. And if you do need anything special, that should apply to Brits same as new Zealanders.

Looked it up, if you are tourist, and are staying in the country for less than 90 days, with a valid machine readable passport, AND an ESTA (electrical system for travel authorization; has to be registered online) you are able to travel visa-free.

Looking into it more, not sure if you only need your passport and your return/ongoing travel ticket, or if you also need the ESTA too...

Yeah, this is what I expect. It's not as if Tony is a resident of Iraq, Somalia, or North Korea. Last I checked, we're been on good terms with the Brits for the past several hundred years...

And Tony; don't worry about state lines. One state just flows right into another; the only lines are on a map. There are no checkpoints or anything, other than at toll booths. But the only time someone is going to be 'checking your papers' is at the airport when you first arrive. And you should be in the fast line as you're coming from a USA-friendly country. Uh, just leave your robe and turban at home.
