While, I loved the book, I'll admit my interest started to wane dramatically when
the colony was introduced. There were simply too many
characters to try and keep track of, and the majority of them sounded the same. Characters bled into each other, and while a good many were well developed, their voices all sounded the same. It was obviously a stretch for Cronin, but it felt like he was trying to go too big, too fast. From the time Amy returns to the moment the military is introduced the story falls apart for me. Everyone sounds the same, nobody really has an identifiable voice, everyone starts to talk the same. Even Amy sounds like everyone else. He tried to tell too complex a story, and barely pulled it off. Who is the story about? Is it about Amy? Is it about Wolgast? Is it about the colony? He crammed an entire trilogy into a single book, and it doesn't work.
