alcohol. It was the alcohol whiskey/ whisky Saul had with him. When he fled into the car, he crushed into his stash of whiskey/y-bottles he had collected from home; some bottles crashed, and the smell of whisky was so overwhelming that the zombies lost track of him. They did not recognize Saul anymore, so they left.
edit: But that does not necessarily mean that this scene is an appeal against alcohol at all ... /edit
But it is a funny idea to consider Scratch as the ultimate Zombie-repellent ...
