I was listening to the series while working on the script for my own horror podcast when this came to mind: I think that Jeremy beat the guy that hired Simon to steal the truck. He also mentions that what got him in the jail was someone taking something important from him, and the reason being that the person he beat was aware of their wrongdoing. I don't think it's an allusion. I listened to what he said carefully. And looks like he did not know all the particular details about any person he tried to imitate. It is meant to disguise his identity, he is really too vague and unprecise about the facts that he says about the crime.
