Wow. Problem solving from crows that you could not expect from some humans.
No wonder they "CAW" when something important is about to happen...

Let me tell you a story about crows.
My office moved this summer to a new building, and I now sit in a room with a lovely little fireplace in it. Turns out the chimney is open, and that there's no cowl over the top. I came in early one day to get a head start on the day, and stepped into my darkened office to find a young crow sitting in my in tray. Staring at me. I backed out of the room in a hurry to get back-up.
When I returned with a gallant rescuer, we found a very stressed crow, who apparently thought I'd intended to leave it trapped in there to rot. It was not happy. It's a great big room that seats 8 people, with high, Victorian ceilings, and young Mr or Ms Crow was flapping at the windows and pooping on *everything*. We opened a window on each side of the room and evacuated.
All was well, the crow departed, and then I saw this: Wild crows can recognise individual human faces and hold a grudge for years against people who have treated them badly. (http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn18429-if-you-think-a-crow-is-giving-you-the-evil-eye.html#.Uq7otyf4abw)
And started to notice that little groups of crows will just sit outside the office, apparently staring at our windows. Periodically through the day we hear a not-too-distant kaw kaw kaw.
I don't like crows any more :(

What I love about that is that not only was the first crow smart enough to figure out how to get the thing, the other crow was smart enough to sit back and let someone else do all the hard work.
