Hi.

I happened to stumble over this word: "surly"

from wiktionary.org:

surly
(obsolete) Lordly, arrogant, supercilious.
Irritated, bad-tempered, unfriendly.
Threatening, menacing, gloomy.

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/surly

And I wonder: how much does "surly" correspond with a) Burt's former gun, b) the character or personality of Burt, and c) and what as a person was Burt's wife like?

All the best!
Liam

Shirley means "bright meadow" so how does that apply to Burt? A little typing and clicking found this:

This unusual name, found chiefly in the south western counties of England, is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and represents the rare survival of the Olde English pre 7th Century personal name "Beorht, Byrht", from "beorht", bright, famous. This was used as a short form of various compound names with "beorht" as the first element, and was reinforced by the introduction of a variety of Old Germanic personal names, with the equivalent "berht", by the Normans after the Conquest of 1066. These names include, for example, Berthier, "bright-army", and Bertram, "
bright-raven*"

Coincidental? Hard to say.

Surely?

Without doubt; certainly.

Ah, I see.

Surly vs. surely. Small letter of 'e' changes everything ...

Thank you.

All the best!

English is the most confusing language on the planet. No question.

"Me fail English? That's unpossible" - Ralph Wiggum

Don't you just love English rules - "i" before "e" except after "c" or before long "A" as in "neighbor" and "weigh". Hmm, that's weird.

And then there's always - comb, bomb, and tomb. Why don't they rhyme?

Oh well,

The rule I was taught in school was "I before E, except when it isn't".

Now that is a good rule...

Another good rule?

Never drink before lunch and never gamble before breakfast.

If you listen to Shirley Bassey's Goldfinger song using crappy speakers, it sounds rather surly bassy.
