So, Here's how I think everything should go down.
They've discovered that the LA area, and, in fact, much of SoCal is infected. Likely the rest of the planet as well.
I believe they should consider looking at moving out of state somewhere. find a 15-passenger van or something. You could cover several hundred miles per day if you had to. Assuming no one else had scavenged for fuel along the interstates, there would be several sources of fuel to get you pretty much anywhere you needed to go.
Some possible options: (Based on my Zombie fiction I'm writing)
-Lansing, Michigan (2 large bunkers built here....in my Fan-Fic)
-Anywhere in the Upper Peninusla of Michigan (Remote, below freezing consistently for most of the fall, and spring, and all of winter)
-Anchorage, Alaska
-Kansas (large, open spaces, able to see zombies coming from a distance)
-Texas (Guns are redily available, as are people who know how to use them, plenty of fuel available, large source of food (cattle). large ranches.
If I were Sgt. Cross, I'd consider going soon, what with one of the members of his party being pregnant and all.
