I haven't seen this brought up on the forum yet, so I figured I would start it...

I know there's been discussion of the best weapon(s) for zombie survival but what about the best Medical supplies/kits?

I recently found out about the "wings of life (http://www.firstaidstore.com/product_details.aspx?item_guid=5062434e-dd32-4e85-a96c-2a0e88848e71)" which I have heard some good things about.

What is your "medical kit"?

Basic first aid kit and a 30 day supply of meds commonly taken by the members ok the house

Trauma kit in a duffle; main grab, gauze, antibiotics, small I.V., shot pads, tape, morphine, pressure reader, tracheal & nasal tubes, neck brace, non-roll splints, pain killers, sterilizers, gloves, precautionary, sutures, tweezers, stitch kit, scalpels, tourniquets, shears, quick clot, breather bag

I recommend looking into these (http://www.itstactical.com/store/its-tactical-medical-insert/) once you have a fully prepared kit. Quick easy access to compartments. also look into non-energy using tech. Like instead of a finger reader, a stethoscope. But i do recommend a high power single LED flashlight with at least 3 changes of batteries. Save space for everything, and use it. Use every available compartment and watch the weight (Ounces make pounds.).

you need specialized training to use most of this stuff. Frankly, I don't want some person with a kit and " goodwill " putting a tourniquet on me with no idea on how to use it and no access to advanced medical help insight ever. I'll opt to just bleed out lol which might be a better option than the gangrene that would set in when the tourniquet stays on to long cutting off the blood to a limb.

which is why, along with the kit, you should also seek out training to use this equipment. skills are much more important than gear, so what you really need, more than a kit, is the skills to treat the wounded.

Yep which is why I don't carry a trauma bag I trust my skills and ability to triage more then I do a bag of crap

I wouldn't have any of this if I was not proficient in the use and application of each and every piece of equipment in my bag. It just so happens that you can't exactly stop the bleeding in your buddy's shoulder caused by a 5.56 round with your bare fingers. Or stabilize a shattered tib-fib, compound femur, and pelvic fracture just by holding it. Can you treat many illnesses and injuries without any equipment? Sure! It's very easy to but only when you have proper training. And one thing that you are taught in D school is how to treat many cases without any equipment.
And that bag of crap may save your life. More so the troop carrying that bag of crap.

In what situation? Combat? Zombies or earthquake ? I have similar skills the way it was presented was vague the average person does not have the skill to use a tourniquet let alone the contents military/paramedic medic bag. I was taught to trust my skills, my hands and the art of triage more then a bag if shit hits the fan.

I'm sure if it came down to it I could dig out a bullet out of an arm and wrap it up. More common sense then anything

I'd take a Family sized trauma kit and but it in a backpack, add a few IV's with tubes and pain meds as well as a 9mm pistol with 4 clips

Infection... Viral fungal and bacterial

not to turn this into a question of manliness...as I know your every bit as capable as myself. Perhaps more so, who knows.. But infection is the least of my worries, should shithit the fan...in the area im in (geographically) I've spent the better part of lets say 25 years in the woods, drank unpurified creekwater, the whole gambit of things most folks would scoff at...so just my own personal opinion, but im not about to carry around a bag of stuff that I personally would find useless...but again, that's just me. I would not advise others to follow my lead.

And while on the subject of leading...lets say you have a bag full of medical equipment, but only know the uses for half the stuff in it...that's fine, and I'm sure it will let you rest a bit easier with that assurance...but should something out of your realm of knowledge happen...those who are with you are likely to look to you as their savoir, because you have the magic bag of goodies...how disappointed will they be when you don't know what your doing?..i say only have what you know, yourself and your group will that much more capable and confident because of that...and perhaps safer as well..

But again, I drink dirty water, you should not listen to me

Infection leads to lost limbs and blood poisoning and death and all that fun stuff. Infection in wounds is very bad, and in an apocalypse, it is safe to say there will be many wounds. I would carry some antibiotics, along with the standard first aid kit. Then again, I would know how to use pretty much all of what I have so I would be happy with everything I have. And I could improvise if need be. Then again, duct tape and crazy glue are also very helpful. Crazy glue can be used in place of stitches, and duct tape is always helpful.

Well...we the halfacre bros are from the woods...thats where we shall return...that said, you can never convince us that a bag of medicine will outway the knowledge we gained from being a bunch of stupid boys...

kek
Jul 3rd, 2012, 09:16 PM
Ah, being stupid boys in the woods does give one some knowledge of dealing with injuries and survival and whatnot. So does nursing school and having older brothers and younger sisters :D Either way, my hermity friend, I think we would both do pretty well in survival during a time of zombies. (And hermity is now a real word.... lol)

I will point out that a great many infections can be decreased with application of soap and water and a tight dressing.I would caution the antibiotics of any sort on a person you did not know as allergic reactions can be deadly.

kek
Jul 3rd, 2012, 09:31 PM
I completely agree with you, yarri. Any antibiotic use would be a last measure, and only on friends or family that have no known drug allergies of any kind. There is a reason one of our 4 hour labs at the beginning of the year was devoted completely to hand washing and keeping a clean environment, it helps stop the spread of things we don't want in our bodies.

I went through the Army's Combat Life Saver Course more times than I can count. So I know how to use 90% of that stuff in the bag, IV's (I'd be nervous but still be able to use expanders such as HEXTEND), tourniquets, HALO seals, all the goodies to treat tension pneumothorax (sp) and those crazy bandages that have clam shells on them that act like quick-clot. Infection sucks balls, in a post-apocolyptic setting a simple scratch can turn into a horrible infection causing fever and limb loss. I'd raid the local pharmacy for all the painkillers, antibiotics cough and cold medicine iodine/anti-septics and painkillers that I could carry... come to think of it I would pretty much empty a CVS in the back of my truck/several-trucks.

You should probably stop drinking creek water, you're gonna get giardia or cryptosporidium

We shall never agree on this situation. We are of polar opposites. Neither my survivorman mentality nor your modern conviences will stop the inevitable from happening....
