So while watching the Meltdown Comics live reading I began to ponder something. When the group was clearing the tower apartments of zombies. How did these people turn? How did these few isolated people in random apartments behind locked doors (I assume locked) turn? Was it something airborn to get them? What do you guys & gals think? Oh and how did Bill not turn?

The building was not secure, zombies got into the building, they killed/turned the tower residents. Locked doors? no problem, these things have super strength, not to mention no one was expecting a zombie attack. They hunt using smell, so they knew exactly where the residents were. The tower group spent the first day clearing out every room in the tower killing off the zombies that were in the tower

So the zombies couldn't open the doors on the army base when the key was left in the lock. Then they could open doors to get in the tower and run up all the floors to bite people. Then couldn't open doors again to get back out and were just stuck in the rooms? The only "open" door was to Angel's girlfriends apartment. Did they use smell yet? The Commander just stood there while they walked by. It was sound at first.

There is a difference between a military base and a civilian apartment building. The base was locked, but the key was left in the door. Theres no way a zombie is getting through a steel security door. The tower on the other hand uses flimsy wooden doors held on HINGES. You can break down one of those doors very easily.

The zombies are not very intelligent, they run after and kill prey. They ran into the building to kill and eat. Once theyd done that they had nothing better to do. Unless they were approached, they were just wandering around the building.

the Zombies have always been using smell, the tower group just didnt realize they were using smell. I can prove it because if you listen to the episode where Angel and Michael are reading through the journals the zombies find a woman hiding in a closet, and then her husband beats it to death. The commander was just standing there when the soldiers were inside a secured building that the zombies could not infiltrate, THe moment they stepped out of the building the zombies were on them. Keep in mind they were trying to keep as quiet as they could as they ran to the hummer, it wasnt sound that gave them away.

It is also quite possible that some people were bitten or infected in some other way and then made it back to the apartment complex alive at first only to give in to the infection and turn into zombies. They then could have spread it around the tower very easily since everyone was in a hurry to get out and not worried about hunkering down and saving themselves, with the exception of Bill that is.

Also note the amount of mass confusion when the outbreak occurred. If a Normal came in contact with an infected person they once knew or were close to, it would take more than a few seconds to register something was very wrong. Even if that person attacked they probably wouldn't have been quick to react or even know how the infection is spread. We're deep into the story and still don't know. Cindy's legs were broken when they found her in the apartment. Either one of them was after her or she was after someone else and they disabled her.

I think it was Lizzy who said her and Riley saw blood splash on people then they started attacking too. So the change seems to happen really fast. Not enough time to really think about going back home or go look for help before you turn. I don't know maybe more to it.

Could they not have just been in the tower (it having been overrun by the newly infected horde that presumably moved on) got infected and were the few stragglers that habitually stayed where they were.

Or, perhaps as the tower was overrun, they opened their doors to see what all the commotion was about, got infected by either splattered blood or bitten, they ran back into their apartments (I think Riley or pegs notes it took a couple of minutes for the newly infected to turn) and as they were locked in (by themselves) just stayed there.

I think that's possible. While they had control for that minute or so maybe they managed to get a little seperation from the zombies (kick it off tehm or push it off them) and get the door locked. The zombies would recognise that they had changed and so would go attack someone else. When eventually they ran out of people to attack the majority of them left the building. They must have been smarter zombies because they realised that they couldn't get at Bill.

The tower being attacked by zombies explains why Datu would have locked himself in the elevator. If he had just heard that something was going down he would have either locked himself in his room or tried to flee. The elevator seems much more like a desperation move, like "oh shit I'm going to die" dive and try to survive long enough for someone to come with help
