I like it, plus if you want to lure the zombies in and get torn apart, it gives you the option. Personally I would want a castle, for the nostalgia. But if I found that house when Z-day went down, I would have to use Saul's line from Chapter three, "I think I just wet myself"

Oh. I didn't know anybody had pictures of my house. Oh well. Guess I'll have to build another one in a more secret location...

Frakkin awesome! The grass could be torn up to plant food... the pool could be turned into a water source without chlorine and you can move out from here...

You can close up and go out and not expect any surprises when you return.

THAT, is indeed awesome. And not hard to look at when the safety mode is off. The grass could indeed be torn up to plant food, but in that case I'd build a higher and thicker wall, just in case.

Hey, if you have money for that baby, a few extra meters of concrete wall won't matter in the least :p

Commander Buzz Kill here,

It activates at the touch of a button? An electrical button? If you are inside hunkered down and the power goes out, how do you go in and out? How do you escape any zombies that got inside?

There would have to be failsafe systems in place to prevent being locked inside. If zombies got it then the building didnt perform very well. I think a backup plan/ escape better be planned. Maybe a safe room inside

What would be interesting is to have walkways between the walls so you could see and attack your enemy--maybe openings and pokey sticks (aha zombie! I poke at you!). Maybe multiple safe rooms as well.

As long as you don't get any climbers this is a great fortress.

That is indeed a fine fortress Jobe. However, what about water and food?

Watch out for jumpers! And make sur no behemoths take out the base pillars

pokey sticks - ah yes the pokey-funny. good ideas about the travel between walls. this could just be what is above or at ground level. underground is a whole different thing.

Actually kind of makes me think of Angry Birds only with zombies.

Crosley Tower in the University of Cincinnati. about ten minutes from where I live. 8 windows per floor 16 floors (I think). The entrances are easily blocked, there are 3 parking garages surrounding the place (pick of the litter for abandoned cars and to grab all teh car batteries. UC also has it's own power plant that doesn't run off the Cincinnati grid. And the best thing of all... this is the home of alot of the science dept's, plenty of tech nerds to hook up alternative energy sources when the power goes off for good.

Forgot to add, it is a single poured concrete structure so it is insanely stable. UC was contemplating tearing it down but the costs would have been huge since it is all but an above ground fallout shelter

The Army has developed some amazing "instant fort" systems for use in Iraq and Afghanistan that could be used to rapidly build fortified positions. You build the walls and strong points with "Hesco Bastions". These are pre-formed plastic and wire forms that link together to create walls, or pillboxes, etc. Then you fill to them to make them bullet, or zombie resistent and immovable. For a temporary fort you fill with dirt, for a permanent base you fill with concrete. Here's a link to their web site, in case you want to order some: http://www.hesco.com/enter.html, and to the Wikipedia article about them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hesco_bastion

The internal structures of instant forts are made up of standard shipping containers, which can be converted into barracks, store-rooms, etc.

With enough time and barrier material you use this system to fortify small towns, or even to build "castles". Maybe this was how the Colony was constructed.

This one is actually a zombie proof house. http://all-that-is-interesting.com/post/4956385434/the-first-zombie-proof-house
I am not sure how it would stand against behemoths, but it looks freakin awesome!

Some cool links on here. Check these out. Some of the price is pretty darned high.

Old silos and "bases"

Here's an article for an expensive "condo" for the apocalypse. It was in Mays' Wired Magazine:
http://www.wired.co.uk/magazine/archive/2011/05/start/underground-survival

And one more for an awesome 'ible from www.instructables.com (One of my favorite sites!):

If you don't have an instructables account I suggest that you get one. This site has given me so many ideas and saved me A LOT of money.

Norwegian Submarine Base for Sale.

The Norwegian Navy is selling a surplus submarine base, built into a mountain on a fjord near Tromso. The price is about $17 million, and it includes the pier, some buildings and a great big tunnel bored deep into a mountain.

I'm going to go for the Day by Day Armageddon style. This is a Nike missile site with 3 missile magazines, one of which is already converted into a residence. Pool, hot tub, tennis courts all for $1,350,000. Come on lottery!

Cool installation, and so much cheaper than the sub base. But, there's no place to park your sub!

My ultimate fortress? An island. The sea makes a pretty effective barrier against the undead. Couple that with designs like you see in the rest of the thread, a reliable source of energy and fertile land and you have yourself a perfect little fort knox. Although a raid on fort knox might be neccessary to afford the island + compound.
