Kc, don't believe this has been answered: Why did K-18 levels rise when a victim is infected, and how is it linked to the infection? Do you have some sort of theory, or did you just choose it as a starting point, if you get what i mean..

Hello Kc,

I would like to raise a question as well. Not sure, whether this has been answered already:

In Chapter #1 Episode #1 one of the first things happening was an explosion, when Michael was in class. Then they switched on the news and learned about the turmoil having started everywhere. This explosion - is it "just" an explosion because of the starting zombocalypse; or is it on of those incidents which actually started it - like an "ex/implosion" that released the z-agent-gases or an explosion due to some (freak) accident in all the panic?

Best wishes!
Liam

1) What happened to the WA merchandise page? I wanted to get some t-shirts, but the site looks down.

2) Ditto for Wayland Productions' website. That looks down too.

You're looking for the exact chemical reaction, but what I will give you is that k18 levels rise as part of the changing.

yup, it was the panic starting. Someone crashed into something that blew up. I'd like to think it was some sort of large propane tank.

What we had in the music pack is all that we are allowed to sell. Our license with the other music providers prevent re-sale of tracks. If we had more custom scoring, we could.

There's no set release date yet because of some internal things we're currently dealing with/being overwhelmed with. One was the remastering, which is being finished. Two is my job opened a new building that I'm responsible for, so my normal workload/stress level is very high now, and the third... remains a mystery.

These are sad news on the one hand. But I totally understand. And I guess these are good news on the other hand that your job keeps you busy. I just hope that the stress-level may drop sooner or later - not because I want to see Tales up, but because less stress is always much better than having too much of it ...
Best news: number three, the mystery ...

As of right now, no. The cast, like most casts when ending a show, goes their own separate ways and might be difficult to bring back together. Many of them live much further now. One day maybe, but as of right now nothing in sight.

Things are going great now, the holidays are over and TOWA continues to be written. It's becoming a long self-contained story, but there are a lot of elements from the main story that are in it. It will fill in some more blanks, while possibly giving a few new ?'s.

High pitched human noises, modified over and over :) It's sort of a trade secret at this point. Signature sounds so to speak.

Any more updates? I'm going to post more updates as we get further into pre-production. Until the script is written completely, there's not much to update on.

It's actually harder to write some things, easier for others. The hardest part is finding the voice for new people all at once. When I added a character to the old cast I didn't have to do it all at once.

And what do you mean the lore is done? :D

I think WND is pretty much dead, but I'm confident that Mick and Redbeard from the We're Alive Fancast will re-ignite the old engines once "Tales from We're Alive" hits the airwaves. And, in the meantime, if you're looking for some additional content, check out the fan-made WA tribute audio drama that the WA Convoy made last summer:

Yes, it's the same, but that's the remastered version. We go back at the end of the season and remove adverts, breaks between episodes, etc... It's a better version.
It still has Michael Swan as the announcer, and the end credits are all one big bunch at the end.

Speaking of Modern Myth Productions, why did it switch to and from Modern Myth Productions during season 2?

And since you asked twice about this, Modern Myth Prod LLC was when we switched from Wayland Productions for a small while, but then the costs of operating an LLC vs a DBA didn't seem feasible. So, MMP went away and we went back to Wayland Productions, and here we are now.

And I have no idea what you mean about bob and money for what?

Bob is a character in a completely random and unrelated movie I thought about.

It costs $20 if you get the remastered version of WA on iTunes.

@Kc, I have two questions:

1. If you made this audio drama into some kind of video entertainment source, how long would it be? Would it be shorter because you can edit out narrations and sensory explanations? Or would it be longer because it needed more scenes for it to be at it's best visual state?

2. If you did actually make some kind of visual version of the series, would it be several long movies, or a tv series? Movies have a much bigger budget, but with how long WA is, you would need to make several sequels, not to mention, where would you find money to fund the movie? Bank loan? Fundraisers? TFWA profits (if applicable)? Aliens? These are all big questions here.

I don't mean to pull a Kalani, but the show is undoubtedly better than probably anything I've sensetorically (my own word there) digested, and I honestly feel that in any format, I would greatly enjoy it, no matter how many repetitions I've went through (7 and counting).

P.S. That was more than two questions, my apologies.

P.P.S. There we go, now this question is on the right thread. (Previously on the TFWA: Lockdown thread)

1. That's sort of like asking how long a movie is based on the book, but since it's script format it could potentially be translated in real time. Realistically the story could be much shorter without having to describe the actions and such. I'd say the fill in the blank sort of lines and descriptions can take roughly 10% of the time. So if directly translated, probably 10% shorter. If adapted, which is most often the case, even shorter maybe. You can montage things and really make things faster if you have visuals to establish rather than dialogue.

2. TV series would be best because of the type of story and also the overall amount of content. Movies run such a different format that it'd have to be heavily adapted. They're structured differently, so in order to maintain the arcs a lot of content and probably characters would end up cut from the series. How to fund something like that? I've looked into it and it'd be at least 1.5 million an episode, and 10 episodes per season. Where to get those funds? There's ways, but distribution platforms determine a lot of where funding comes from. Are we there yet? No, but maybe one day. Just waiting for the right deal to come along.

And no worries, if it was in TFWA section I would have answered it as if it was just Lockdown that you were asking about.

Lockdown has had some post-production delays for a few reasons, but we've been getting better on track, and the train is moving forward faster now. We ended up losing our editor very early on in the process, that then added major delays after that as it sort of de-railed our post production schedule. There are also other reasons we've had some delays, but that stuff I can't get into now. It's all good, but related to #outpost1 and #outpost2, which are two new physical locations for WA related things. Lots going on behind the scenes, which is why we've been a bit quiet as the post-production keeps moving forward.

We've considered all sorts of these options, but the reality is that they cost more than our operating budget. Hopefully in the future we'll see more advertisements for our programming, but as of right now it would require a lot of capital. Perhaps Lockdown will receive some sort of adverts.

I would tag bathrooms and buildings with the petroglyph symbol but I'm afraid I might peak the interest of the local Police Department's Gang Unit.

First, Thank you for such an awesome series. I just discovered this Friday of last week and started listening Monday. I'm now on Chapter 17.

I know you can purchase a CD from Amazon or download free on Podcast app for iPhone. I tried downloading the episodes directly from the site, but the .mp3s won't play. So what does the Season CD from Amazon or the purchase on itunes provide that listening to the podcast does not? Is there a method to purchase or acquire a digital copy of the series besides itunes?

What led you to create We're Alive? (if this has already been asked I can go through the entire thread to find it).

What made you choose the distribution channels you did?

Finally, there is a local zombie themed run in Syracuse, NY in the fall. Any chance I could persuade you guys to get a booth?

The versions on iTunes are also free to download. It's just another format to download them. And the CD's do not have any advertisements, and run straight from one episode to the next. It's also a way to give thanks for them making the series, as they are only paid by sales of the CD's, donations and advertisements.

Yeah, I'm thinking of picking them up. I do not like iTunes. I use Amazon Music as my service, I prefer their app and I like that I can upload my own music up to a point. Do you know anything about downloading the mp3s after you make a purchase from iTunes, like to your computer?

I also see that the episodes are on Soundcloud. Love the artwork there too. What is the difference of those vs. the podcast and the purchasable episodes.

Kc what kind of tips do you have for story writing/planning? This is my first story other than the fanfic (which I am having trouble uploading chapter 1) and I'm trying to make a serious effort with a goal set to get it published. I have a good idea for the characters and I'm kinda forming it out in my head but I want this to be quality, so I decided to ask you (+100 brownie points) I think someone asked this already but what kind of "strategies" do you use to create a plan that actually fits and makes sense throughout the story? I appreciate your help

P.S. I hope that makes sense. Right now I'm drugged up on medication

We unfortunately don't have the budget to do any traveling. We're a pretty small company, and stuff like that is a huge expense. We also don't have a lot of time as we're constantly producing at our max speed level.

Me too brother, me too. Ok, work backwards. Find your ending, then find the furthest point from the ending, something that needs a journey to get to. Make sure there's major obstacles, and dig the holes as deep as they can go, so it's rewarding when they get out. Since you worked backwards, your story ending is a perfect fit and you've given a satisfying arc for your characters.

That's my recipe, just the simplified version ;)

Is this a common method? I've often wondered if complex stories had he endgame firmly established before the rest of the story is written.

My general answer on these types of inquiries, I unfortunately have to say no. The reason being sorta along these lines: http://deadline.com/2009/09/why-he-will-not-read-your-fucking-script-15711/
2nd note, I just have a bit too much going on to spend time reading other's materials. Literally I'm doing something from morning to night currently.

I use all kinds of things for notes... white boards help flush out ideas and draw connections, voice memos for those sudden bursts of inspiration, and scrivener for organizing all my notes, which is MASSIVE.

Sadly, we had some trouble with the footage on the camera with card formats, the cards were too new for the stupid camera. We have some cutaway stuff, but a lot from the finale event is gone :( It makes me very sad.

I like telling a variety of different kinds of stories. The nice thing about We're Alive, and what I learned from Lockdown... I can pretty much do whatever I want in terms of styles and content. Lockdown had a very "trapped" feeling, akin to the poseidon adventure. And Goldrush is gonna have a Western Feel. There's a lot versatility in these stories.

Poseidon Adventure...exactly the feel. It came to mind while listening multiple times--the original, not the remake version. Lockdown kept the tension level cranked while you try to maintain hope everyone gets out alive. Such a fantastic job.

Speaking of Goldrush...there's a small Gold Rush exhibit in front of the Gene Autry Museum by the LA Zoo. The discovery of gold was the catalyst for the diversity still seen in CA today. From 1848-1855 iabout 300,000 migrants came from all over world came here to take part. And yes I talked to the people running the exhibit about the joy of listening to WA. You just never know where the next fan will come from. They didn't even know what the Podcast icon on their phone did. Rookies.

I have a great deal figured out about it already, all down to the tiniest detail. As for Ink, he wasn't involved with the zombies before he turned. After, well that's been our story. Lockdown and We're Alive have most all the details that one needs to understand the motivations of his actions. Tanya's research had some solid evidence to that, and for the most part she's right. There's a lot of further details about the infection and whatnot that just haven't come up in one of the storylines currently. Will it in the future? Possibly.

KC,
Will there be a resolution to the question, "will the humans survive?"

With most zombie outbreak stories you never find out if the human groups survive and rebuild. Nor do you often see either a cure or the zombies (and I say this loosely) defeated.

Will we be seeing any nuclear reactors go critical?

I have many more questions. But I'm saving them.

There is no cure. Frog can't turn back into a tadpole ;)

Will we be seeing any nuclear reactors go critical?

That's something that I've danced around a bit, I'm going with the answer that most all of them were shut down into an emergency cooling mode by those responsible for the reactors. Some did not, however.

I think she would focus on her sector of fire, so to speak. If it's close enough to have an issue, like san-onofre (https://www.google.com/search?q=san-onofre&spell=1&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiXsaTXpaLPAhVK4mMKHVLYAuoQvwUIGygA) , she might have checked it out at some point. Radiation damage is similar to how humans react... they might be a little more resilient, but they don't become ghouls, but rather can die from cell death like humans.

We don't have a date set for the release of Goldrush. I tend to not give release dates until things are written and moving forward. Stories like Lockdown and Goldrush that have many elements between two points of time in the story tend to be a bit more complicated to write because they have to fit between existing points. It will be another audio drama with the soldiers Puck, Muldoon, Robbins and Carl as the main cast. There will be some familiar voices as well. We don't have a kickstarter planned as the last one really limited us on what we could do, and didn't end up paying for everything. We might do some fundraisers or whatnot, but not to the extent that we did with Kickstarter. Anything else you'd like to know?

Ink was unique. Very unique, which is why he was a focal point of the first series. There's a lot more just sitting and waiting to be written, which is why we're expanding with new writers. I'll still be in charge of the story, but there will be new blood soon enough :)

Hmm I was listening to last season and just thought about a theory. Goldrush reminds me of gold mines. And Tanya had a theory that the zmbz came from under ground? Maybe there was some miners that were digging and were exposed to a toxin that infected them. They probably were stuck down there and when they died they decomposed and the gas they released made ground zero?¿?¿?¿? just a guess though. Was I close?

how do go about submitting it to you and what file format?

hi KC, I dont know if you remember the posting I did about why Cindy in We're Alive had her legs broken. I had suggested that Angel and Cindy were going to steal military weapons for the families. However, Angel was setting a trap for the families.
well, I decided to expand on that and wrote a 21 page short story about it. I would like submit it to you. I know you have been really busy with gold rush and I cant wait for it to start being played.
how do go about submitting it to you and what file format?
I have saved as doc, docx, rtf, and pdf.

thanks for inspiring me to write this.

Love to read it! email kc@werealive.com :)

On a side note, Angel wouldn't do anything for the families after he left them, but I still want to read it -

Any thoughts to converting to novels? or Graphic novels?

Novels are something that are in the works, but Graphic novels, haven't really been on my radar. Since WD came from comics, I don't see a huge gain to be made with WA as a translation there. It could be cool, but it's one of those things where I would only venture into with the right team and artist as well.

Have you considered making a We're Alive Table top RPG? There are D20 systems you can pick from, or build your own. It might give people another unique opportunity to live out their zombie dreams, and it also is a great way to generate new story lines.

I have been in development with someone on that for a while, they're still working on it. But, there might be something else coming that could peak your interest.

Maybe a WA promo type game app? Follow a story thread or create your own safe house? That would be something really fun to play!

Also just a random thought is cj in a family cause she's an incredible leader and at one point it was implying that she was wearing a ring.

I don't think so, she's just very organized and task efficient. I'm the same way when it comes to covering all bases and having back up plans. Her alpha personality probably would make her a good Family member, though. ^^

Hey.....did cj really try to kill Victor. I'm referring to the part where their going to get pictures at the gas area for cj. I find it very unlikely that she missed a leak in the suit. She also said that she checked the suits. I'd understand cause she didn't wanna use her supplies 3x as fast and she didn't need vic very much.

I still believe to this day, that she was using him as an experiment dummy, maybe to see if a lower rate of exposure made a difference to the "zombification" quality the air had.

Hey there KC, every time i listen to WA I always find myself trying to visualize what some of the scenes look like and what some of the creatures appearance would be and those little chapter images always help a bit but i always find myself wishing for just some thing more. like chapter 25's image finally gives me an idea of just how menacing and actually huge the behemoth is, and i was wandering how do you choose what the chapters image will be and contain or is that left to the artist?
and also have you ever considered that like at the end of a series putting together a book with what you see some of these scenes just to give your listeners a better idea as to what the world looks like in your head? im not saying like a comic book but just one with large full detail images of points and places in the story for reference

Do you happen to take into consideration when making We're Alive what people say on the forum? For clarification, my exampe is reading what fans say in discussions in the theory section and then incorporate interesting tidbits within the podcast itself?

If so, can you cite some examples that may have occured so far?
